Lately, I’ve been focusing my scripture study on identifying “spiritual one-liners” – compact verses that contain extraordinary wisdom. For the next few weeks, I’ll share some that have particularly touched me.
Today’s one-liners come from Alma 17, a chapter often remembered for Ammon’s heroic defense of the king’s flocks. Beyond the dramatic narrative lies a series of phrases that beautifully illustrate our spiritual mission when viewed as metaphors for serving our Heavenly King:
“I will be thy servant” (Alma 17:25) – Ammon’s simple declaration embodies the core of discipleship and our covenant to serve God with complete dedication.
“Restoring these flocks unto the king” (Alma 17:29) – More than just protecting sheep, this captures our mission to help restore God’s scattered children to Him.
“Bring them back unto the place of water” (Alma 17:31) – A powerful metaphor for guiding souls to Christ’s living waters that satisfy eternal spiritual thirst.
“Encircle the flocks round about” (Alma 17:33) – Illustrates our need to surround those we serve with protection and love in a world full of spiritual dangers.
“Returned them to the pasture of the king” (Alma 17:39) – The ultimate goal isn’t just protection or nourishment, but bringing souls back to their spiritual home in God’s presence.
When read with spiritual eyes, these simple phrases transform into a template for ministering, revealing our divine commission to serve, protect, nourish, and ultimately help return God’s children to Him.
I testify that as we follow Ammon’s example of humble, loving service, the Lord will magnify our efforts to gather His scattered flock. What spiritual one-liners have impacted your life?
