Spiritual One-Liners: 2 Nephi 31:20

“Press forward with a steadfastness in Christ” (2 Nephi 31:20). These words from Nephi capture the essence of enduring discipleship. Notice how he pairs action (“press forward”) with attitude (“steadfastness in Christ”), teaching us that spiritual progress requires both movement and anchoring.

This brings to mind the imagery Paul uses of running a race “with patience” while “looking unto Jesus” (Hebrews 12:1-2). Like trained athletes who pace themselves for endurance while keeping their eyes fixed on the finish line, we need both steady effort and clear focus.

What strikes me most about Nephi’s counsel is how it transforms our view of challenges. Pressing forward implies resistance—you don’t need to press against smooth paths. When we expect opposition, we can prepare for it rather than being surprised by it.

I’ve found this principle at work in my own conversion journey. When I joined the Church, some family relationships became strained. But Nephi’s words helped me understand that pressing forward didn’t mean pushing through thoughtlessly—it meant moving ahead with steadfast faith while maintaining Christ-centered relationships. Over the years, that patient persistence has borne fruit. Those same family members who initially struggled with my decision have come to recognize and appreciate the positive changes the gospel has brought to my life, strengthening our relationships in ways I never expected.

I testify that steady spiritual progress comes through consistent, faithful movement. As we press forward with our eyes on Christ, each step, however small, takes us closer to Him. The key isn’t pace—it’s persistence with purpose.
