Spiritual One-Liners: 1 Nephi 3:7

In our continuing study of spiritual one-liners, today’s verse captures Nephi’s remarkable faith when facing a seemingly impossible command: “I will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded” (1 Nephi 3:7). This powerful declaration is followed by his testimony that “I know that the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them.”

What strikes me most about this verse is its absolute certainty. Nephi doesn’t say “I think” or “I hope”—he knows God will provide a way. This reminds me of when I first felt prompted to join the Church at age 19. The obstacles seemed insurmountable: family opposition, lifestyle changes, and deep doctrinal questions. But like Nephi, I discovered that with each commandment came divine assistance.

This principle appears throughout scripture. When Moses faced the Red Sea, God parted the waters. When Daniel was commanded to interpret dreams, God gave him the ability. When the Brother of Jared needed light for his vessels, God touched the stones. In each case, the commandment came with divine enabling power.

The Lord has promised, “Look unto me in every thought; doubt not, fear not” (D&C 6:36). This isn’t just encouragement—it’s an invitation to trust that He will always provide a way, even when we can’t see it yet.

I testify that God never gives us a commandment without preparing a way for its accomplishment. When He commands, He enables.
